Recognising the Deteriorating Patient (NEWS2)

42 minutes0.75 CPD hours7 modulesDoctorsNurses & midwivesPhysios, paramedics & AHPs

This course teaches you how to recognise and respond to an adult patient who is getting worse, using accurate observations, the National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2), clinical judgement and structured escalation. It includes worked scoring examples, the use of oxygen saturation scales, communication with SBAR, and a case study showing weak and strong reflection after a delayed escalation.

What you will learn

  • Measure and record the physiological parameters used in NEWS2 accurately, and explain why each matters.
  • Calculate a NEWS2 score correctly, including selecting the appropriate oxygen saturation scale and scoring new confusion.
  • Match the NEWS2 score to the recommended clinical response and monitoring frequency, while applying clinical judgement.
  • Escalate concerns clearly using a structured tool such as SBAR, and use graded assertiveness when a response is not adequate.
  • Explain the common reasons deterioration is missed and reflect on how to reduce them in your own practice.
