This course explains how physical illness, mental health problems and fatigue can affect your clinical performance, and what your regulator expects you to do when your health may put patients at risk. It covers fatigue risk and practical ways to manage it, how to seek help early through occupational health and confidential support services, and how to reflect on an incident in which your health or tiredness played a part.

What you will learn

  • Explain the professional duty to seek advice and adjust your practice when your health may affect patient safety.
  • Describe how fatigue and sleep loss affect attention, memory, decision-making and the risk of error.
  • Use a simple self-check before and during a shift and take practical steps to manage fatigue, including safe travel home after night shifts.
  • Identify sources of support, including occupational health, your GP and confidential services such as NHS Practitioner Health.
  • Describe how regulators approach health concerns and what insight and remediation mean in this context.
  • Write a supportive, honest reflection and remediation plan after an incident involving your health or fatigue.
