This course explains how clinicians make diagnostic decisions, why skilled people miss or delay diagnoses, and the practical strategies that reduce the risk. It covers cognitive bias, safety-netting, documentation, what regulators expect after a concern about clinical care, and how to write a reflection and remediation plan with evidence.
What you will learn
- Describe the two main modes of clinical reasoning and explain when each is most likely to fail.
- Recognise common cognitive biases, including anchoring, premature closure and diagnostic momentum, in worked clinical examples.
- Apply practical debiasing strategies, including a structured diagnostic timeout and a 'worst-case' differential.
- Give and document clear, specific safety-netting advice that a patient can act on.
- Write a structured reflection and remediation plan after a missed or delayed diagnosis, supported by verifiable evidence.
